Macaluso Custom Design started in business painting children's rooms and designing and creating murals for nurseries. It was always her favorite thing to do. For Brenda it is such a special experience to be involved with this intimate room and the start of a new chapter in a family's life. When painting a mural in a child's rooms there are times when a client has in idea of what they're looking for. Many times Brenda will help conceptualize a theme after talking with them about life for a while.
Decorating Ideas- Glitz and Glitter
Painting murals and faux painting children's rooms are just pure enjoyment from Macaluso Custom Design. Paint is not the only element that's used in the design and creation of a mural. Brenda incorporates glitter and glitz to make a little girls room stand out.
For one client and her very young daughter, Brenda painted wall-to-wall dragonflies, butterflies and flowers. The dragonflies were wearing bikinis. The butterflies had various colors of hair and hairstyles. It was all very creative. Brenda's own son had themes that spread across the walls of his bedroom. There was detail in every little corner of the room. His name was an ocean floor that morphed into a rain forest that blended into a Safari of animals. He wanted it all! She started out painting characters when he was five years old and his comment to her was "Mommy I want it to look real." All of the characters and everything in the room looks authentic. For that little boy, the process to paint the children's bedroom took six months.
Beauty of faux finishing
The beauty of a faux finishing product or process is it never actually has to be over. You can continue to add layers, details and character to a wall over time. Depending on the client, a project can be a continual work in progress: an art piece that is shared and created over time.
When the little girl with the dragon flies and butterflies became a teenager, Macaluso Custom Design created a new concept for a teenage room.
Furniture for children's room
Furniture can also be painted to blend in with murals or children's color themed rooms. Macaluso Custom Design enjoys repurposing items faux finishing them. For example, an old door can be both faux finished and repurposed as a headboard for a bed using Italian plaster and stencils as a backdrop. She has repurposed old doorknobs with a faux finishing look and used them to hang jewelry. Brenda has used a very old wooden ironing board, and after applying a faux finish and used as a plant stand. Repurposing is using old objects then crafting and painting them to be usable, useful items! An outdated dresser can be painted and repurposed into a baby's changing table.
What to look for in a professional painter
The Macaulso Custom Design team are true artists. They are extremely creative. They can express creative ideas and can draw and paint those ideas. They will show clients a portfolio of previous work in children's rooms and have samples of painting techniques available. They are flexible and creativity. These skills are necessary when bringing the clients’ vision into reality and represent it on walls and furniture. They do research when a client has an idea of what they want in a child's room. Brenda spends many hours doing research on characters so her artist rendering is as close to accurate as she can possibly get. This process also gives her inspiration for the project. No Winnie the Pooh has ever been looked the same for Brenda.
